Potency you can verify

Most turmeric is a commodity blended across farms and seasons. Lakadong is a place, and Eden bottles only what it grows.

Lakadong turmeric holds Geographical Indication Registration 741. It can only come from the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, the way Darjeeling can only come from Darjeeling.

Grown by smallholder farmers in the East Khasi Hills, in soil and cloud that exist nowhere else. Sliced by hand, dried in the sun, then milled and packed in small lots.

Every ritual below is made the way Indian homes have always made it: two to four ingredients, a few quiet minutes, and a quarter teaspoon of Lakadong.

Made in Indian homes for generations, at bedtime.
  • 1Warm a cup of milk gently, don't let it boil.
  • 2Whisk in ¼ tsp of Lakadong.
  • 3A few peppercorns, a little coconut oil, honey to taste.

Ingredients
1 cup milk, dairy or plant · ¼ tsp Lakadong · a few black peppercorns, lightly crushed · 1 tsp coconut oil or ghee · honey or jaggery, to taste
Method
  1. Warm the milk gently, never to a boil.
  2. Whisk in the Lakadong until the milk turns gold.
  3. Add the peppercorns and the coconut oil, let it steep a minute.
  4. Sweeten to taste. Sip warm, best at bedtime.

Why the pepper and the oil: curcumin is fat soluble, and the piperine in black pepper has been shown to raise curcumin absorption by about 2000% (Shoba et al., Planta Medica, 1998). A quarter teaspoon is still plenty.

Good to know: a pinch goes far. Lakadong runs a deeper gold than ordinary turmeric. It stains cloth and counters, so wipe spills quickly.
